Asian PTA producers have a hard time

Sinochem Xinxun is under the influence of a large number of new production capacity put into operation. In 2012, Asian refined terephthalic acid (PTA) producers will face the pressure of overcapacity. Because many companies have already fallen into a loss situation, the operating rate of the device may further decline.

In 2011, Asia's PTA capacity was 43.7 million tons. According to ICIS data, Asia's PTA production capacity will increase by 26% in 2012, and all new production capacity will be concentrated in China. In the newly added 11.5 million tons/year of production capacity, six new sets of equipment and one set of equipment were removed from the bottleneck. Zhejiang Far East Petrochemical Co., Ltd. will start the surge of China's PTA expansion in 2012. The company's new 1.4 million-ton/year PTA plant in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, is scheduled to be put into production in early March, when the company's PTA total production capacity will reach 3.2 million tons/year. After BP Zhuhai's bottleneck transformation of a 900,000-ton/year PTA plant in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, was completed in January, it will add 200,000 tons/year of capacity. By then, BP's PTA production capacity in China will reach 1.6 million tons. / Year, BP's global PTA production capacity will reach 7.45 million tons / year. Tongxin Group's Jiaxing Petrochemical Company plans to open a new 1.5 million-tonne/year PTA plant in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province in the second quarter.

In addition, Asia’s largest PTA producer, Zhejiang Yisheng Petrochemical Company, plans to open another 2 million tons/year PTA plant in Hainan from July to August, at which time the company’s PTA production capacity will be increased to 7.5 million tons/year. Become the world's largest PTA producer. Xianglu Petrochemical will open a new 2 million tons/year PTA plant in Zhangzhou, Fujian province in the third quarter, and its total PTA production capacity will reach 3.65 million tons/year. China Polyester Giants - The Hengli Group plans to open two new PTA installations in Dalian, Liaoning Province in the third quarter, with a total capacity of 4.4 million tons/year, of which the first will be put into production in July and the second will be It is put into production from September to October.

In 2012, the new capacity of PET downstream products in Asian PTA will be less than the increase in new capacity of PTA. According to the ICIS data, 11.5 million tons/year of new PTA production capacity can support about 9.9 million tons/year of new polyester production capacity, but in fact, in 2012, the new polyester production capacity in Asia was only 8.5 million tons/year, and Asia’s polyester The total capacity will reach 63 million tons/year, an increase of 15%. Among the newly added polyester production capacity, more than 6 million tons/year come from China, 1.7 million tons/year come from India, and the remaining production capacity comes from South Korea and Southeast Asia.

Asian PTA producers have incurred losses since the end of September 2011. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the spread between paraxylene and PTA further narrowed to $115/tonne. For PTA producers, the break-even point spread is around $150/tonne. Affected by the loss, PTA producers in Asia have started a round of production cuts since November 2011, or reduced their operating rate, or shut down their installations to reduce losses. ICIS data shows that the average operating rate of PTA installations in Asia dropped from 90% in 2010 to about 86% in 2011. According to industry analysts, due to the impact of new production capacity being put into production in large quantities, the operating rate of PTA installations in Asia will further decline to 75% in 2012.

Traders believe that China will rely more on domestic products due to the impact of a large number of new production capacity, and imports will decrease. From January to November 2011, China imported a total of 4.89 million tons of PTA products, a year-on-year decrease of 1.3%. China's Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand are the major sources of PTA imports in mainland China. The total imports of PTA in the country are over 97%. However, India will fill the gap in China's imports of PTA reduction, because in 2012 India will add 1.7 million tons of polyester production capacity, while India also has no PTA expansion plan in 2012. According to plan, 8 polyester projects will be put into operation in India in 2012. The largest of these projects will be a 390,000-ton/year polyester yarn expansion project in Silvassa, Xincheng Industry, which is expected to be the fourth in 2012. It will be put into production in the quarter, and the polyester production capacity of Xincheng Industry will reach 2.4 million tons/year.
