A team of scientists from Berkeley Lab and the University of California Berkeley have teamed up to create an E-whiskers sensor device that can distinguish between such small pressures as a single pressure (Pascal). Berkeley Labs said that they use ultra-thin carbon nanotubes. This artificial whisker can give the robot the ability to feel like a cat. Even if a banknote falls on the table, it can sense it. These tiny, hair-like distributed sensors are about 10 times more sensitive than existing sensors and can track weather patterns or do other things.
The electric whisker sensor combines a carbon nanotube soft sticker with a silver nanoparticle film and emits it outward to form a highly flexible conductive network matrix. Carbon nanofilms allow the matrix to be highly mechanically strained. To make them look like real moustaches, scientists also incorporate elastic fibers in the composite membrane.
To make these moustaches useful, Berkeley Lab scientists made them an array of seven beards that map the wind in three dimensions. Others use it to include tracking of nearby objects, wearing it to track micro-motions, and so on. For example, it can be used on fitness belts and smart watches to test pulse and heart rate. Other features include the use of robots to make them feel like cats and to track subtle changes in their surroundings.
