Costron's world's first polyurethane fan turbine blade won the award

Since Covestro successfully piloted the world's first polyurethane fan turbine blade in April this year, this research has been widely recognized in the wind energy and composite materials industry. At the just-concluded 22nd China International Composites Exhibition - CCE2016, Costron won the JEC Innovation Product Award for this innovative application.

Polyurethane blade application won the award

Fan turbine blades are typically machined from glass reinforced resin by vacuum infusion technology. The success of polyurethane composites in large-scale blade infusion process shows that polyurethane resin itself not only has excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance, but also its processability is well reflected in the actual production process. It cures faster, has better processing performance, significantly increases production efficiency, and its lower organic volatiles make the production process more environmentally friendly. The use of polyurethane for the manufacture of complete fan blades opens up new applications for this high-performance resin.

The China Composites Exhibition-JEC Innovation Award began to collect projects as early as June. Through the evaluation of many experts from China and France, 34 projects were selected in the initial evaluation, creating a new high. The evaluation criteria include innovation, technical certification and economic benefit assessment. In the end, the Covestro Polyurethane Fan Blade Project won the unanimous recognition of experts in the industry for its breakthrough research and development achievements, and won the award for innovative application. As a senior award in the field of composite materials, Covestro has won this award, showing that the application of polyurethane composites on wind turbine blades has been widely recognized in the industry.

Dr. Li Qian, R&D Director of Covestro Polyurethanes Asia Pacific, said at the awards ceremony: “The industry experts’ recognition of the application of polyurethane on wind turbine blades gives us more confidence in the project prospects. Next we will cooperate with more. Partners are working together to install polyurethane blades on the wind farm to contribute to the renewable wind industry."

Listen to industry needs and accelerate product development

After winning the award, Costron's technical team and many insiders deeply discussed the wide application of polyurethane on wind turbine blades. Nearly 50 representatives from wind turbines, blade plants and composites application companies were invited to the Polytechnic Research and Development Center in the Asia Pacific region of Covestro to visit the research and development facilities of Covestro and to observe polyurethanes at close range. Excellent performance of the blade. Yao Yuan, deputy general manager and chief engineer of Chongqing International Composites Co., Ltd. said during the visit: “Costron has a strong technical team and research and development capabilities, and we will continue to promote the progress of polyurethane projects for wind power.” Covestro Polyurethanes Division Asia Pacific Ms. Jing Jing, Marketing Director, responded, “Product development needs to listen to the needs of the market and customers, and use our solutions to further help reduce the overall cost of the blades, and work with partners to develop longer, lighter and more efficient blades. ”
