Europe imposes mandatory 'manufacturing area' label on imported textiles

The EU's internal market committee, in amending the new draft law on textile trademarks, stated that textiles from third countries or sold in the European Union should be mandatory to "manufacture" national origin labels, so that consumers are not misled. Products produced in the European Union will voluntarily make original marks.

The committee voted on the second reading of the bill to restore most of the parliamentary amendments at the time of first reading, indicating the origin of the country, identifying animal-originated components, and reviewing the possible new labeling provisions.

The draft law aims to simplify existing textile labeling rules to encourage the development and use of new fibers. It should encourage innovation in textile and clothing, and at the same time make it easier for users and consumers to benefit from innovative fiber products.

The committee said that this textile must go through at least two of several manufacturing processes before it can be considered as a textile originating in the EU countries: spinning, weaving, finishing or sewing.

The committee said that consumers still have the risk of inadvertently buying real fur products. In fact, they do not like to do so. Furs are potentially harmful to the health of those fur/hair-sensitive consumers. Mandatory fur tags allow consumers to identify products that may harm their health.

The new rules do not apply to tailors who work at home or independently run textile products produced by independent companies.
