Johnson Controls Inc., a large auto parts supplier, said it plans to launch a small number of next-generation batteries for gasoline and electric hybrids as early as the end of 2008.
At present, most hybrid vehicles on the market, such as Toyota's Prius and Ford's Escape sport utility vehicle (SUV), use nickel-metal hydride batteries. The industry expects nickel-metal hydride batteries to be replaced by lithium-ion batteries in the next 10-15 years.
Gregg Sherrill, group vice president of Johnson Controls' battery business, said he believes that nickel-metal hydride batteries will still exist for some time to come, and that there will be no problem for 10-15 years. However, in a recent interview, he said that lithium-ion batteries will replace nickel-metal hydride batteries over time, because lithium-ion batteries are lighter, smaller, provide more power, and production costs will be lower and lower.
Sherrill said that Johnson Controls plans to introduce a small number of lithium-ion batteries for testing at the end of 2008. He said the company is in talks with several automakers, but he declined to name the companies. However, mass production of lithium-ion batteries will begin sometime after 2010.
