Scientific researcher Shi Miao's cotton seed shell turned into a new type of carbon material

The cottonseed hull originally used for feed and edible fungus culture medium was transformed into a powerful nitrogen-doped porous carbon material by the scientific research personnel of Xinjiang.

The latest news from the Xinjiang Institute of Physics and Chemistry Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the fine chemical engineering center team led by Zhang Yagang, a researcher in the resource chemistry laboratory of the institute, used cottonseed hulls as raw materials to successfully prepare nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials. This research result was published online recently in the international journal "Progress of the Royal Society of Chemistry". This new material prepared with natural plants as raw materials has lower cost, higher electrochemical performance, and certain adsorption, and has broad application prospects in the field of energy and environmental protection.

The cottonseed hull is the shell left after the cottonseed is separated by the sheller. Due to its high cellulose content, it is widely used in livestock feed processing and breeding of edible and medicinal bacteria. In Xinjiang, the resources of cottonseed husks are wide and the resources are very rich.

Zhang Yagang introduced that cottonseed hulls can be directly carbonized, the process is simple and safe, and there is no need to add templates for post-processing and other steps. It can be prepared into various forms of nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials. Compared with the traditional preparation method of carbon materials, this method has low raw material cost, stable and uniform raw material components, and does not require complicated component separation.

The electrode material prepared with this nitrogen-doped porous carbon material shows excellent performance in supercapacitors. In addition, the nitrogen-doped porous carbon material also has excellent dye adsorption performance and can be used as a new type of functional material for adsorption and separation.

Functional carbon materials have a wide range of applications in the fields of catalysis, adsorption, sensing, separation and energy storage. The use of various renewable resources as raw materials to prepare new carbon materials has become a research hotspot in recent years. The research team led by Zhang Yagang, with the support of the National Natural Science Foundation and other projects, has used cotton as a raw material to successively prepare a variety of plant-based carbon materials to further tap the potential value of cotton. Related scientific research results have applied for multiple national invention patents and Authorized. (Reporter Zhu Tong correspondent Liang Le)
