Solar module power supply

A university is planning to leave the national grid and use "solar turf" to produce its own electricity.

The goal of the Jewel and Esk Academy in Edinburgh is to plan an acre of land adjacent to the campus, which will cover about 800 solar modules. The estimated daily production capacity is 1,076 KW, which is enough for the entire campus. This solar lawn is so called because it will be filled with grass and wildflowers, and the surplus electricity produced will be used for local community groups and projects. The college said that the project was developed to reduce its dependence on government funding. The construction of this power station will cost 300,000 pounds, but it will save 150,000 pounds of electricity bills each year after it is put into use.

The plan was submitted earlier this month to the Midlothian County Council, which said the initial discussions were positive. This site will also be used as a research area for the analysis of students' interactions between biodiversity and solar panels. Prof. Steve Tinsley, the project leader, said: “This is a very exciting project. For our students and lecturers, this creates a precedent for self-provided teaching facilities in Scotland and an innovative way for the college to develop. It also reduces the reliance on government funding."

These projects will help accelerate the new generation of engineering skills and narrow the skills gap in low-carbon technologies. Knowledge transfer at this level can also greatly benefit industry partners and contribute to the economy as a whole. The project is scheduled to begin early next year and will be completed by the end of the year.
