Indianexpress News A scientist dedicated to the study of small-scale water treatment research is currently planning to apply his research and development to a solar toilet.
Michael Hoffmann of the California Institute of Technology has discovered that sunlight reacts electrochemically with human excrement and releases oxidants and hydrogen that can kill microorganisms.
According to reports, researchers plan to use a fuel cell to collect these hydrogen to maintain a self-cleaning mechanism.
Last week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave Huffman research funding to develop prototype toilets.
Huffman said that he now needs $2,000 for such a toilet, but he hopes that the cost will be reduced in the process of technological simplification and mass production.
Hoffman's research funding is part of the global public health initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation dedicated to improving health conditions. (Translated by Veronica)
