Scientists at the Carnegie Institute use high-potential chemical vapor deposition to grow diamond crystals. In a small chamber, hydrogen and methane are bombarded with charged particles or plasma, and hardened by high temperature and high pressure for 10 minutes at 2000 degrees Celsius and 50,000 to 70,000 times sea level atmospheric pressure. They found that this superhard synthetic diamond is at least 50% harder than natural diamond. Hemley, of the Carnegie Institution, said: "This is a new way to produce diamond crystals, which can be used in a wide range of applications, such as electronics and cutting tools for next-generation diamonds."
