According to China’s National Defense Science and Technology Information Network, the US Naval Research Agency (ONR) has awarded Hamilton a $18 million contract to develop energy-saving technologies for the Navy’s large-displacement unmanned underwater vehicle prototype (LDUUV INP) project. .
According to the contract, Hamilton's researchers will focus on demonstrating an aerodynamic-independent (AIP) propulsion system based on a high-energy Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) for the next generation of large long-term surveillance unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV). ). PEMFC technology requires a relatively low temperature and pressure range, as well as a special polymer electrolyte membrane. This fuel cell is considered a promising alternative to replace alkaline fuel cells.
The U.S. Navy’s LDUUV INP project develops a large-scale unmanned underwater vehicle for the implementation of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions in oceans and offshore sea ports. The deployment time should be more than 70 days. The project will develop UUV's autonomous long-time navigation system with a power of 817 to 1,800 kilowatts, up to 3 meters (120 inches), and sustainable for 46 to 70 days.
Hamilton will work with General Atomics, Lynntech, and NexTech Materials for the development of a large UUV for the future. (Institute of Electronic Science and Technology Information, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chen Yun)
